Training on inclusive mobility at AQPA
At AQPA, we are aware that Getting around by bus or metro in Montreal can be a challenge for people with functional limitations. As part of the Inclusive Mobility program: the public transport learning program, we were able to offer our members practical training aimed at promoting their independence on public transport.
A program tailored to the specific needs of our members
Le Inclusive Mobility program offers concrete tools to people with functional limitations so that they can move around independently and safely. The goal is to facilitate their integration into society by giving them the opportunity to master the use of bus, metro, train and REM networks.
Understanding the transportation network
The training day, which took place on Thursday, December 5, began with a theoretical session, where our members had the opportunity to discover the basic principles of Montreal's public transit network. They were able to learn how the bus, metro, train and REM system works, while receiving practical advice to optimize their journeys and ensure their safety.
A private STM bus for our members
After this theoretical introduction, it was time for practice! An STM bus was specially chartered to allow participants to experience a real-life situation. Accompanied by an attentive and caring driver, they were able to practice essential everyday actions, such as validating their ticket or requesting a stop.
These everyday gestures can be challenging for people with aphasia. While aphasia is a communication disorder that affects speech, it can also be accompanied by severe physical disabilities.
Thanks to this training, our members were able to acquire practical skills to better manage their travel in a complex urban environment.
Inclusive mobility: a right for all
Through this program, the AQPA was able to offer its members concrete tools to improve their independence in public transportation. We thank the ARTM and the STM for this great initiative, which today allows our members to take a new step towards greater autonomy.
